The Rev. Penelope Duckworth spoke of the Syro-Phoenician, or Canaanite, woman and her exchange with Jesus in the 15th chapter of Matthew. The woman asked Jesus to heal her daughter and Jesus refused, saying he had come to the Jews and not to others. When she persisted, he went on to say, "It is not fair to give the children's food to the dogs." The woman did not take offense but instead turned the conversation to her favor by likening herself to a family dog under the table. Jesus was so impressed by her wit and humility that he healed her daughter. Her intelligent faith is a model for all of us.
