At All Saints we are nurtured by the preaching of our clergy. Our history of outreach has been nurtured by the prophetic preaching and witness of our rectors. Making the Gospel relevant to our lives is paramount, both as encouragement to discern God’s will in our personal and spiritual lives, and in setting the context for taking on issues in the world.

  • Examining approaches to conflict proposed in today's readings by Paul [in Romans 13:8-14] and Matthew [in Matthew 17:15-20]
  • Sin is behavior which estranges/alienates [creating the grounds for conflict].
  • Matthew, it seems attributing ideas from his community to Jesus, suggests starting with a private conversation.
  • Indeed talking privately is a good, likely the only place to start.  But what then?
  • Escalation as Matthew suggests?

10 Pentecost 2011: Who do you say I am?  A question that each must answer for him or herself.

The Jesus seminar sees Jesus as the embodiment of the force for freedom, standing against domination.

Another view is to see Jesus as the wise teacher, speaking with authority about our relationship to God.

Many see Jesus as the powerful and merciful healer of body and mind.

The book "Jesus Through the Centuries" puts forward the idea that Jesus is the human presence addressing the compelling situation of the day.

The Rev. Penelope Duckworth spoke of the Syro-Phoenician, or Canaanite, woman and her exchange with Jesus in the 15th chapter of Matthew.  The woman asked Jesus to heal her daughter and Jesus refused, saying he had come to the Jews and not to others.  When she persisted, he went on to say, "It is not fair to give the children's food to the dogs."  The woman did not take offense but instead turned the conversation to her favor by likening herself to a family dog under the table.  Jesus was so impressed by her wit and humility that he healed her daughter.

Walking On Water

Read as metaphor, this gospel shows Christ offering the Church (as Peter) the courage to overcome chaos (represented by the surging waters).  It also shows God the creator in charge of all creation through Jesus. Read personally, we can look to the calming presence of Jesus in our lives as we learn to trust.

Week after week we listen to fragments of the scriptures read, which is all very good in its way, but it’s difficult to maintain any sense of continuity and, with that, any sense of how individual stories might relate to one another. We tend to encounter them as random events, even though we know they are lifted out of a continuous narrative.

The phone hacking scandal enveloping News Corp has filled the media these last weeks.
